We Need You to Join the Fight Against the Delta Variant

Last November (2020), we shared what Minnesota family docs wanted you to know as COVID-19 was surging and ways we all could do our part in limiting the spread. Many of you joined us in taking actions that made a difference. Thank you!

Soon after, COVID-19 vaccines arrived! They have proved to be safe and effective. We, again, asked you to get the shot to protect yourself, your family/friends and the community around you. Many of you did, and the side effects of being able to safely gather, again, were cherished. Thank you!

Now, the Delta variant is the dominant strain across Minnesota (and the U.S.): it’s more contagious and may cause more severe illness than past variants (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention). We are seeing infections and hospitalizations increasing again—and, in turn, our health system is being strained.

We know many of you are SO tired and have done your part in the past to limit the spread and fight this pandemic. Unfortunately, the more people in our communities who don’t do their part, the more the virus will continue to mutate (change) and cause problems for all of us.

Once again, we’re hearing from family physicians across the state: They are tired. They are struggling. They are fighting for you. But, they need YOU to join the fight.

How can we all do our part?

1) Get vaccinated, if you’re 12/older. Vaccines are safe, effective and our best tool at preventing severe illness and death from COVID-19. Find your vaccine in Minnesota.

We know there is loads of misinformation and disinformation out there, and it can be a lot to wade through. Bring your questions/concerns to your family/primary care doc and get evidence-based answers.

2) Wear a mask when you’re indoors in public places. Even if you’ve been vaccinated, we know layered prevention strategies will help us reduce transmission. We recently joined with the Minnesota Medical Association and Minnesota Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics to urge K-12 school districts to require masking for all at the start of this upcoming school year.

3) Practice physical distancing. Put six feet of distance between yourself and people who don’t live in your household.

4) Avoid crowds and poorly ventilated spaces.

5) Stay home if you’re sick.

Please thoughtfully consider how your actions can make a difference. The time to spread love (not COVID-19) is now!
