Resolution Update: ICD Codes for Gender-Affirming Care

In 2022, the Minnesota Academy of Family Physicians (MAFP) brought a resolution advocating for new ICD Codes for gender-affirming care to the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP) Congress of Delegates, which the AAFP adopted.

Since this resolution was adopted, there has been an update provided by the AAFP Congress of Delegates: “Action taken by the 2022 Congress of Delegates: Substitute adopted. The AAFP Board of Directors referred the resolution to the AAFP Commission on Quality and Practice. The AAFP board accepted a recommendation to implement by submitting comments to the International Classification of Diseases Clinical Modification, Tenth Revision, (ICD-10-CM) Coordination and Maintenance Committee, advocating for the creation of new ICD-10-CM codes for gender-affirming care that are reflective of the patient experience. The AAFP is currently prepping to send a letter on this and a related resolution to CPT [Editorial Panel].”

See all the actions taken on this resolution by the AAFP.

This resolution is intended to improve the care of trans and gender non-conforming patients by giving physicians the tools to accurately report their services in ways that uphold the dignity of their patients. When the resolution was originally presented to MAFP, asking for this issue to be brought forth to AAFP, it was noted that when “discriminatory legislations and hate crimes persist against the LGBT+ community, advocating for inclusivity in medicine is of utmost importance..

Resolutions like this one, advocating for the inclusive care of some of our most vulnerable community members,  reflect our commitment to reducing health disparities in Minnesota and upholding our mission to support family physicians in providing high quality and comprehensive medical care for all patients.

As MAFP staff, we have made a commitment to move forward and track the resolutions brought to us by our members. It is an honor to do so, supporting the family physicians that keep us all healthy.
