Examining Structural Drivers of Child Health Inequity

J’Mag Karbeah, PhD, MPH
Assistant Professor, University of Minnesota School of Public Health

In this session, we will examine structural drives of child and adolescent health inequities and examine how interpersonal, institutional and structural experiences of discrimination exacerbate health inequities.

Objectives:

  • Identify structural drives (i.e. racism, sexism, and cisheteropatriarchy) that contribute to disparities in access and quality of care for pediatric populations.
  • Examine reports of health care discrimination in a pediatric population.
  • Identify practice and policy solutions to address persistent inequities.

About the Presenter:
Karbeah is a health services researcher and Assistant Professor in the Division of Health Policy and Management at the University of Minnesota School of Public Health. Her research aims to interrogate and dismantle the impact of structural racism. Karbeah received her bachelor’s degree at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and both her master’s and doctoral degrees at the University of Minnesota School of Public Health. Her mixed method research leverages theories and methods from demography, sociology, population health and health services research to examine the structural drivers of maternal and child health inequity and seeks to identify policy and practice solutions to ameliorate racism’s impact.
