The leadership of the Foundation and the Academy have continued to strengthen the alignment of shared strategic priorities. Foundation board members participated with Academy board members at a full-day strategic planning session in October 2024.

The Foundation successfully raised funding to support scholarships to send 26 Minnesota medical students to the 2025 AAFP FUTURE Conference (previously called National Conference) coming up in August, fund five Innovation Grants to residents and students, and fund two David Mersy, MD, Summer Externships for medical students.

This past year, the Foundation also served as the fiscal sponsor for the startup nonprofit WeCare Foundation, whose mission is to care for our health care professionals who care for us. WeCare has since been granted their nonprofit status from the IRS.

The committee is providing a session at the 2025 Spring Refresher in conjunction with the medical student group White Coats for Black Lives, bringing parts of their health justice series content to MAFP members in a more accessible way. This year, the MAFP board orientation included the health equity lens tool developed by the committee.

The committee discussed the food and housing insecurity resolutions that were adopted at the 2024 House of Delegates and put together a list of resources and opportunities for MAFP members to engage on the topics via the advocacy blog. The committee developed an evaluation process to understand whether the MAFP’s diversity and inclusion goals are being met within our educational programming.

The committee-requested Interpreter Access Task Force has been approved by the MAFP Board of Directors and will come together mid-2025.

The 2025 MAFP legislative priorities focus on investing in primary care by increasing Medicaid reimbursement rates to ensure access to care, addressing administrative burden by prohibiting mid-year formulary changes and continually looking for opportunities to support and expand the family medicine workforce.
The Primary Care Stakeholder group continues to meet on a regular basis to hear from policy makers and other stakeholders about priorities and opportunities for primary care. Please follow the MAFP blog to get updates on our advocacy efforts.

The MAFP is now contracting with Megan Verdeja at United Strategies for our 2025 legislative lobbying. We are excited to have Megan on board and are working with her to ensure that policy-makers hear the voices and priorities of family physicians and the MAFP. We are grateful to Dave Renner and the MMA for his years of great service and legislative representation for family medicine, and we look forward to continued partnerships.

Staff and/or MAFP leadership have met with numerous legislators, as well as staff from the Commerce and Health and Human Services agencies, to discuss MAFP priorities. The MAFP is part of a loose collaboration of specialties and health systems led by the MMA to work on outpatient fee-for-service Medicaid reimbursement rate parity. We have also signed onto a coalition advocating for Medicaid support for the Behavioral Health Collaborative Care model, as well as to a coalition working to establish a task force to address barriers to interpreter services. The MAFP held another successful family medicine legislative lunch in conjunction with the February 19, 2025, MMA Physicians’ Day at the Capitol.

The Forum included 11 presentations and 8 posters.

The MAFP has been facilitating conversations between family physicians and OB/Gyns around how to best support the FM OB practitioners across the state. Rural family doc leaders at low-volume hospitals have asked for assistance in identifying opportunities to help them stay current and confident with their OB skills. The group has also been discussing challenges with credentialing and other opportunities for advocacy and education.

FM OB resources have been curated and put on the MAFP website to assist members. The MAFP is exploring providing ALSO training for members and their teams beginning in 2025. The MAFP has started conversations with Medi-Sota to explore a partnership to offer ALSO and ALSO trainer education. Staff have also been in conversation with faculty at the University of Minnesota Medical School Duluth campus about partnering on a research project to better understand the OB credentialing landscape in Minnesota.
