Maintenance of Certification Resources

The ABMS Maintenance of Certification (MOC) program is a process designed to document that physicians maintain the necessary competencies to provide quality patient care in the specialties in which they have been certified. It is an ongoing process and will require the assessment and improvement of practice performance by physician specialists. The American Board of Family Medicine (ABFM) utilizes the MOC to continually assess ABFM Diplomates.

American Board of Family Medicine - Follow the link to the Maintenance of Certification page on the ABFM website. The mission of the ABFM is to promote excellence in medical care through educational and scientific initiatives. Through certification and maintenance of certification programs the ABFM pursues its mission by establishing, maintaining, and measuring high standards of excellence in the specialty of Family Medicine. Certification/Maintenance of Certification, Definitions - To avoid possible confusion which could result from the use of these terms, the AAFP adopted the following definitions to clarify the distinctions when the terms certification/Maintenance of Certification are used in reference to physicians.

METRIC® Measuring, Evaluating, and Translating Research into Care - For ABFM Maintenance of Certification for Family Physicians (MC-FP), all family physicians must do at least two Part IV modules in each ten year cycle. METRIC makes it easy to complete the MC-FP Part IV requirement as a group.

The METRIC program guides you through a step-by-step process. The time to complete the program ranges between one and 12 months which includes a mandated 30-day intervention period.
