What is the House of Delegates (HOD)?

The HOD convenes once a year to inform and direct the MAFP leadership and staff. Adopted resolutions from the HOD are needed to:

  • Change membership dues
  • Amend the Bylaws
  • Elect MAFP officers (view officer descriptions)
  • Review the actions of and provide guidance to the Board of Directors

This event occurs the day before or day after the annual two-day Spring Refresher. It includes deliberation on resolutions, updates from the AAFP and MAFP and election of MAFP officers. Breakfast and lunch are provided, as well as an end-of-day reception.

Each MAFP local chapter determines a certain number of delegates to represent the membership at HOD. Delegates come to the HOD meeting prepared to act on proposed resolutions. Contact the MAFP about becoming a delegate for your local chapter.

Resolutions are the way members bring forward changes and/or issues that affect the specialty. They have a specific format which you can view in an Example Resolution that was adopted at the 2016 House of Delegates. This Resolution Writing Template will help you craft a resolution, and the Resolution Preparation Worksheet will help you get your resolution ready for submission through the online form.

Resolutions for the 2019 House of Delegates were due March 19, 2019. If you have a resolution for 2019 that you have not submitted, please contact the MAFP office about the possibility of a late submission.

Resolutions for the 2020 House of Delegates will be accepted beginning early 2020.

Why make the effort?

Participating in the policy-making process is a powerful benefit of your membership. Resolutions not only help to guide the policy decisions of the Academy, they can raise awareness of issues of importance to family medicine. A strong resolution may also make its way through the House of Delegates and be carried to the AAFP Congress of Delegates to potentially become policy at the national level. See how a resolution becomes MAFP policy.

Authoring a resolution is also an excellent way to get involved in the Academy and enjoy the satisfaction of being a change agent for the improved health of Minnesotans and healthcare in our state.
