Laura Wellington, M.D., Minneapolis, MN, received the 2012 Resident of the Year Award from the Minnesota Academy of Family Physicians (MAFP). The award recognizes a third-year resident for significant contributions to family medicine in the community, including teaching, leadership and educational activities. Candidates are typically nominated by teachers and/or colleagues.

Dr. Wellington is finishing her training with the North Memorial Family Medicine Residency Program. A graduate of the University of Rochester in New York and the Drexel University College of Medicine, those who nominated her say Dr. Wellington has been an integral part of the "Underserved Medicine” track that has been developed at the residency including setting up clinical activities at the Bridge for Homeless Youth and the Exodus House Respite Program for the Homeless. She is also fluent in Spanish and has volunteered at several medical clinics in Peru, as well as worked in India.

Dr. Wellington served as chief resident of the residency program and saw her fellow residents through a number of challenging situations, including a tornado that damaged many patients’ and staff members’ homes.

One nominator wrote "Dr. Wellington is clearly someone who will be a future leader in or specialty and family medicine will be better for having such a person.” The Resident of the Year Award was presented to Dr. Oberhelman on April 26, 2012, during the MAFP Spring Refresher at the Minneapolis Convention Center.

The Minnesota Academy of Family Physicians is a professional association of approximately 3,000 family physicians, family medicine residents and medical students organized to assist family physicians in providing quality medical care in Minnesota. The MAFP is the largest medical specialty organization in Minnesota and is a state chapter of the American Academy of Family Physicians, one of the largest national medical organizations in the United States with more than 103,000 members.
