Andrew Slattengren, DO, FAAFP Minneapolis, February 18, 2020 – The Minnesota Academy of Family Physicians (MAFP) has named Andrew Slattengren, DO, FAAFP, the 2020 Family Medicine Educator of the Year. This award is presented annually to an outstanding teacher of family medicine in Minnesota.

Slattengren is a family physician and assistant professor at the University of Minnesota Medical School. He currently serves as the associate program director and director of osteopathic education for the University of Minnesota North Memorial Family Medicine Residency. Family medicine residents have described Slattengren as an educator who is approachable, intentional and patient.

Third-year family medicine resident Lucas Boyle, MD, said, “Dr. Slattengren approaches mentoring like a coach and ensures that his learners are all challenged enough to grow. Like a good coach, he motivates his learners around a shared story. It is often the story of the patient’s struggle to live the life they want. Together, we take on limitations from chronic pain, distress from addiction and chronic disease. Every patient helped is celebrated as a win, and every setback is an opportunity to learn and a reminder to bring our best effort every day.”

Slattengren joined faculty at the University of Minnesota in 2011. Prior to that time, he was faculty at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He currently mentors and precepts family medicine residents and teaches courses and workshops for family medicine residents, medical students and undergraduate students.

He is a founding board member of Family Medicine Midwest, a 12-state collaboration dedicated to building a strong family medicine workforce in the Midwest region, and an active member of the MAFP. Slattengren currently serves as our president-elect and previously chaired our Academic Affairs Committee.

He has been recognized for his excellence as an educator by the University of Minnesota Department of Family Medicine and Community Health, University of Minnesota Medical School and University of Wisconsin.

“Dr. Slattengren is an amazing mentor and exemplifies lifelong learning and work-life balance. He has always pushed me past my comfort zone into the ‘learning zone’ to be a better provider and better person,” said third-year family medicine resident Laura Robitschek, DO.
