St. Louis Park, March 1, 2019 – The Minnesota Academy of Family Physicians (MAFP) has selected Hanna Nedrud as the recipient of the 2019 Medical Student Leadership Award. This award is presented annually to a fourth-year medical student who demonstrates leadership in family medicine on a local, state and/or national level.

Nedrud, a medical student at the University of Minnesota, is passionate about family medicine, health equity and public health. Nominators describe her as a leader who is compassionate, dedicated and engaged.

“Prior to medical school, Nedrud was in AmeriCorps and served in an urban underserved community. From the early stages of her community service, she has been cognizant of ethical, responsible, respectful community engagement. During medical school, she has continued involvement in activities promoting social justice and community engagement,” said Kacey Justesen, MD, program director, University of Minnesota North Memorial Family Medicine Residency (where Nedrud completed a nine-month longitudinal rotation, the Metropolitan Physician Associate Program).

Nedrud’s community service during medical school has included chairing the programming and education committee for The Ladder, a mentorship program for underserved youth interested in health careers, and coordinating CHAT (Community Health Advocacy Talks), monthly discussions on health disparities for Minneapolis community members. She was also a research assistant on a project analyzing legislative approaches to addressing health disparities and presented findings at last year’s American Academy of Family Physicians National Conference for Family Medicine Residents and Medical Students.

At the University of Minnesota, Nedrud has served as vice president of the Family Medicine Interest Group, service chair of the Gold Humanism Honor Society, chair of the Knowledge Cooperative (a student group) and chair of the Christian Medical and Dental Association.

Nedrud will graduate from medical school in May and begin residency in family medicine.
