ST LOUIS PARK, MN: February 20, 2017:

The Minnesota Academy of Family Physicians (MAFP), Minnesota’s largest statewide medical specialty representing over 3,100 family doctors across Minnesota, announced today that Macaran Baird, MD, MS, of St, Paul, MN, received their 2017 Innovation & Research Award.

The recipient of the Innovation & Research Award must, through the course of his or her career, have contributed in a major, outstanding manner to the development of family medicine research in Minnesota and/or nationally. Candidates are nominated by their colleagues.

Dr. Baird is, and always has been, an innovator,” said Angela Buffington, PhD, MA, the director of behavioral medicine for the University of Minnesota Mankato Family Medicine Residency. “Early on in his training, he recognized that Family Medicine is a specialty that thrives when practiced via novel approaches that are groundbreaking, team-based, and inspiring. He subsequently devoted his career to challenging clinicians in multiple disciplines to collaborate in thinking about different ways to improve the health and well-being of patients.”

Baird recently announced his retirement from The University of Minnesota Medical School as Head of its Department of Family Medicine and Community Health. Following graduation from Macalester College, Baird graduated from the University of Minnesota Medical School. During his medical residency, he completed family therapy training and later received a second Master’s Degree. He has spent his career teaching and practicing integration of behavioral medicine into clinical care.

Baird will receive the Innovation & Research Award on Saturday, March 4, 2017, at HealthPartners in Bloomington, MN, during the MAFP Innovation & Research Forum. He will also be recognized at the MAFP Spring Refresher on April 20, 2017, at The Depot Minneapolis, alongside the 2017 Family Physician of the Year.
