The Minnesota Academy of Family Physicians (MAFP) has selected Scott Jensen, M.D., of Watertown, MN, as the 2016 Family Physician of the Year. This award is presented annually to a family physician who represents the highest ideals of the specialty of family medicine, including caring, comprehensive medical service, community involvement and service as a role model.

Family physicians from across the state were nominated for the award by patients, community members, and colleagues. The MAFP Board of Directors chose Dr. Jensen as the winner after reviewing nomination letters, references and credentials.

Dr. Jensen has been a practicing family physician for more than 32 years. In 2001, he opened Catalyst Medical Clinic in Watertown. He is praised for his tireless commitment to his patients and the community.

“It’s not just a profession. It’s a lifestyle. It really is more of an innate part of his character rather than a job.” said co-worker Kristin Olson, CNP.

Along with his practice, Dr. Jensen teaches one day per month at a University of Minnesota Family Medicine Residency program in St. Louis Park. He also co-owns a Watertown restaurant, is a senior ministry leader at his church, and is president of the Watertown Lions Club.

“He’s a leader, but he has a servant’s heart,” said patient Brian Fragodt. “You can see that in the way he does medicine.”

Dr. Jensen is running for state senator in Minnesota District 47. If elected in November, he will be the only physician in the Minnesota legislature. He is also the author of a book titled “Relationship Matters” which was published in 2015.

“You can’t contain Scott,” said Pastor Joel Johnson. “He’s a little bit of a powder keg in terms of his presence. He’s just everywhere.”

The Family Physician of the Year award has been given annually since 1981. The award was presented to Dr. Jensen at the MAFP All-Member Celebration during the MAFP Annual Meeting on Thursday, April 14, 2016. The event took place at The Depot Minneapolis.

“This award gave me an overriding sense that we’re doing something right and that I’m an awfully blessed man,” said Dr. Jensen.
