In December, the MAFP Foundation funded six projects via its Innovation and Research Awards:
- Understanding barriers to optimal diabetes control (Nirmal Lumpkin, University of Minnesota medical student)
- Improving mental health literacy in English language learners (Colleen Bell, University of Minnesota medical student)
- How medical interpreters and providers work together (Ramla Kasozi, MD, MPH, University of Minnesota St. John’s Hospital resident)
- Serving socially isolated West 7th seniors (Marquise Hopson, MD, Daniel Okubo, MD, and Carrie Wojick, MD, United Family Medicine residents)
- Developing culturally-informed suicide prevention materials for the Karen population (Stephanie Aldrin, MD, University of Minnesota St. Joseph’s Hospital resident)
- Analysis and community education of syphilis rates in North Minneapolis (Leah Alemu, Dominique Earland, Aisha Mohamed and Zahra Shakur, University of Minnesota medical students)
Congrats to the Minnesota medical student and family medicine resident grantees, and thank you to all those who have donated to support such inspiring work from the next generation of family docs!

The MAFP Foundation is a registered 501(c)3 organization, supporting educational and scientific initiatives that advance family medicine and improve health outcomes of patients and communities across Minnesota.
We regularly award innovation and research grants to practicing family physicians, family medicine residents and medical students.
