Addressing Negative Physician Ratings Online

Online rating systems are becoming more prevalent in the health care industry. Unfortunately, there is currently very little that can be done to remove any negative posts on public sites, however, family physicians can be proactive and encourage patients to go online and rate them, as an effort to build positive ratings.

The following are some suggestions to help protect your reputation:

  • Complete a Google search on your name and practice. This will shed light on what information is populated from the search. Typically if there is an upset patient or a patient that is providing negative reviews, they will do so on multiple websites, some of which are free of charge to review. Information from the free sites may be an indication of the types of reviews posted on other websites.
  • Implement a patient satisfaction survey. The AAFP offers “Steps to Conducting a Patient Satisfaction Survey” and survey implementation services for members. Simply asking for feedback is a great way to know what patients think and ways in which members can improve their services to them.
