What is the House of Delegates (HOD)?
The HOD convenes once a year to inform and direct the MAFP leadership and staff. Adopted resolutions from the HOD are needed to:
The single-day event begins at 7:30 am at The Depot Minneapolis, ahead of the annual two-day Spring Refresher and includes deliberation on resolutions, updates from AAFP and MAFP, and election of MAFP Officers. Breakfast and lunch are provided as well as an end-of-day reception where you can connect with your colleagues from around the state.
Each MAFP local chapter determines a certain number of delegates to represent the membership at HOD. Delegates come to the HOD meeting prepared to act on proposed resolutions. Contact the MAFP about becoming a delegate for your local chapter (contact info below).
Resolutions are the way members bring forward changes and/or issues that affect the specialty. They have a specific format which you can view in an Example Resolution that was adopted at the 2016 House of Delegates. This Resolution Writing Template will also help you craft a resolution.
Resolutions for 2017 House of Delegates must be submitted via email to email@example.com by Monday, March 20, 2017.
Why make the effort?
Participating in the policy making process is a powerful benefit of your membership. Resolutions not only help to guide the policy decisions of the Academy, but can also raise awareness of issues of importance to family medicine. A strong resolution may also make its way through the House of Delegates and be carried the AAFP Congress of Delegates to potentially become policy at the national level.
Authoring a resolution is also an excellent way to get involved in the Academy and enjoy the satisfaction of being a change agent for the improved health of Minnesotans and of healthcare in our state.
