St. Louis Park, March 20, 2018 – The Minnesota Academy of Family Physicians (MAFP) has selected Robert Levy, MD, as the 2018 Family Medicine Educator of the Year. This award is presented annually to an outstanding teacher of family medicine.

Levy is a family physician and assistant professor at the University of Minnesota Medical School. He has been teaching family medicine residents, medical students, and medical fellows since 2011.

University of Minnesota North Memorial family medicine resident Kari Halvorson, MD, said, “Levy is a gentle, enthusiastic teacher who always asks about resident well-being, pays attention to our resiliency and cares about our families and home lives.”

Levy leads substance use recovery services at the University of Minnesota Physicians Broadway Family Medicine Clinic. He is board certified in family medicine and addiction medicine. Levy also completed a fellowship in addiction medicine and chronic pain at Hazelden, an internationally recognized leader in addiction prevention, treatment and recovery solutions. He has more than six years of experience treating a variety of substance use disorders.

With the opioid epidemic that has ravaged communities across Minnesota, resident physicians who train with Levy benefit from his expertise in addiction medicine. University of Minnesota North Memorial family medicine resident Christopher Childs, MD, MPH, said, “Residents are trained in the use of medication-assisted therapy for opioid dependence using buprenorphine, which many of us have recognized as a critical skill in our future careers as family physicians. We benefit immensely from Levy’s expertise in addiction medicine and primary care psychiatry in both inpatient and outpatient settings. He is truly passionate about these topics and continues to grow as a subject expert and policy advocate.”
