St. Louis Park, March 20, 2018 – The Minnesota Academy of Family Physicians (MAFP) has selected Lauren Williams, MD, as the 2018 Family Medicine Resident of the Year. This award is presented annually to a third-year resident for outstanding contributions to family medicine through community involvement, leadership and educational activities.

Williams has been actively involved in family medicine advocacy and health policy throughout her residency experience. Her nominators describe her as an advocate and a leader.

Past MAFP president and American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP) board member Lynne Lillie, MD, said, “Williams has been a role model in advocacy of healthy communities, family medicine and health equity.”

Williams is currently chief resident at the University of Minnesota North Memorial Family Medicine Residency Program. She has served AAFP as a member of its Commission on Government Advocacy and Commission on Quality and Practice. She has been a past resident director for MAFP and was a co-creator of MAFP’s Advocacy 101 course, a resident-led workshop to engage resident physicians in health policy and advocacy. Williams has also served as the resident representative for the Minnesota Medical Association Policy Council. In 2017, she was named the University of Minnesota Alumni Association Advocate of the Year.

“Lauren has been one of the most inspiring and dedicated chief residents we have ever had. Her testimony last year to the Senate [advocating for increased family medicine funding] was compelling and convincing. Her commitment to patient care is exemplary, and her patients love her,” said Michael Wootten, MD, director of the University of North Memorial Family Medicine Residency Program.

Williams will complete her family medicine residency in June 2018. After residency, Williams will practice family medicine with obstetrics at North Clinic in Maple Grove.
