St. Louis Park, March 20, 2018 – The Minnesota Academy of Family Physicians (MAFP) has selected Paul Stadem as the recipient of the 2018 Medical Student Leadership Award. This award is presented annually to a fourth-year medical student who demonstrates leadership in family medicine on a local, state and/or national level.

Stadem, a medical student at Mayo Clinic School of Medicine in Rochester, Minnesota, is passionate about family medicine and public health. Nominators describe him as a humble servant leader, who is a mentor to many.

“Paul has served informally and formally as a mentor to others. He has been a great advocate for primary care and family medicine as a leader of the Family Medicine Interest Group at Mayo. He is a strong voice on the medical school admissions committee, seeking to identify applicants interested to serve in primary care. His bedside ability and work ethic are an inspiring model to students and residents who work with him,” said Margaret Gill, MD, advisor, Mayo Clinic School of Medicine.

Stadem’s leadership roles have included student director of the MAFP Board of Directors, member of the MAFP Foundation Board of Directors and member of the Mayo School of Medicine admissions and family medicine undergraduate education committees. He also served as co-president of both the family medicine and public health interest groups at Mayo.

His community service has included working at a student-run free clinic and serving as a member of the Somali Health Advisory Committee in Rochester. Stadem is also a recipient of both the Mayo Clinic School of Medicine Merit Scholarship and Paul Ambrose Scholarship, a nationally competitive scholarship awarded to students interested in preventative medicine and public health careers.

Stadem will graduate from medical school in May and begin residency at the University of Minnesota North Memorial Family Medicine Residency Program in June.
