St. Louis Park, March 20, 2018 – The Minnesota Academy of Family Physicians (MAFP) named Michele Allen, MD, MS, recipient of the 2018 Innovation & Research Award. This award is presented annually to an individual who has made a major contribution to the development of family medicine research at the state and/or national level.

Allen is a family physician, associate professor, and accomplished researcher in health disparities at the University of Minnesota Medical School. She currently serves as the interim director of the University of Minnesota Program in Health Disparities Research, which seeks to eliminate health inequities through collaborative research, innovative education and trust partnerships.

She is co-principal investigator of a $2.4 million National Institute of Minority Health and Health Disparities grant, working to enhance emotional well being, academic achievement and prevent tobacco and other substance use through the promotion of student-school connectedness. The study primarily focuses on ninth grade students who are of Latino, Hmong, and Somali heritage.

Nominator Kevin A. Peterson, MD, MPH, said, “Allen works with schools, with young adults and children from minority groups, promoting health, well being and behavioral health.” Her work has focused on family medicine’s goals around health and wellness promotion and health equity.

Allen has completed a fellowship in primary care research and the Robert Wood Johnson Clinical Scholars Program. She has served as principal investigator of about 15 grants/contracts, many of which have been federally funded. She has authored nearly 30 peer-reviewed publications and serves as a reviewer for several scientific journals, including the American Journal of Public Health and JAMA Pediatrics. Allen has also presented her work at a variety of national and international conferences.
