The Minnesota Academy of Family Physicians (MAFP) has named Dawn Blomgren, M.D., of Crystal as its 2005 Family Physician of the Year. This award is presented annually to a family physician who represents the highest ideals of the specialty of family medicine, including caring, comprehensive medical service, community involvement and service as a role model. Dr. Blomgren is the only female family physician to be honored with this award since it was first given in 1981.
Thirty-two family doctors from across the state were nominated for the award by community members, co-workers and patients. Six finalists were selected from the field of nominees. After reviewing dozens of nomination letters, the MAFP Board of Directors chose Dr. Blomgren as the winner. The award was presented to her during the President’s Dinner on Thursday, April 21, 2005, at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Minneapolis. Outgoing MAFP President, Carol Featherstone, M.D., said, "Dr. Blomgren demonstrates the excellence we strive for and expect in our Family Physician of the Year.”
Dr. Blomgren practices at Northwest Family Physicians in Crystal. She is the clinic’s medical director and has been a family physician in the community for nearly 20 years. Patients who nominated Dr. Blomgren say she provides quality healthcare in an extraordinary way. "She listens. It’s so important to have somebody who listens for your health,” said patient Mary Hammond of Blaine. Others praised her clinical skills, her gentle nature and her ability to make anyone feel comfortable.
When describing her career in family medicine, Dr. Blomgren said, "For me it’s all about the people. The people that are patients and the people that I work with so those relationships have just been very important.”
The Minnesota Academy of Family Physicians is a professional association of approximately 3,000 family physicians, family medicine residents and medical students organized to assist family physicians in providing quality medical care in Minnesota.
