MAFP at your FMIG - Tackle Youth Smoking

Youth smoking is still a problem in Minnesota and we need the help of all medical students to advance policies that raise the tobacco purchase price from 18 to 21 years. FMIGs can schedule a 45 minute presentation to learn what medical students can do to address this public health issue. The presentation includes a “Call to Action” to raise awareness of youth smoking and demonstrate support for raising the tobacco purchase age. Your partner, Lisa Regehr at the MAFP will assist with scheduling, location and dining options. Contact Lisa to get on the schedule.

American Academy of Family Physicians/AAFP Foundation FMIG Funding Initiative $600

The FMIG Funding Initiative application cycle is now open! The deadline to hold an event and complete the requirements for the funding is December 9, 2017. There are steps to take before the event so make sure to read through all of the requirements. Please note your FMIG has received this information directly from the AAFP.

Family Medicine Interest Groups at all U.S. allopathic medical schools and branch campuses are eligible for a $600 grant to put toward their group’s operation in whatever way they see fit. The purpose of the program is to provide crucial funding to FMIGs to work on the front lines at their colleges and increase student interest in family medicine.

FMIG Student Membership Ambassador Program

Family Medicine Interest Groups build awareness of family medicine and communicate the benefits of AAFP membership. At the beginning of each academic year, the FMIG can appoint one member of the FMIG to be the AAFP Student Membership Coordinator. Your FMIG will receive the following rewards by increasing AAFP student membership on your campus.

  • Gain more student members.
  • Receive money for your FMIG group.
  • Orient students to the specialty of family medicine.
  • Work closely with medical students and your FMIG.
