The landscape of newborn screening is changing—the increased presence of parental advocacy groups bring new political pressures to the historically scientific, evidence review-based approach that new conditions would go through before addition to the recommended Uniform Screening Panel (RUSP). Nominated disorders for inclusion on the RUSP more and more frequently are blurring the inclusion criteria lines. This year Minnesota has added Pompe, MPS-1, and X-ALD to its newborn screening panel. Disorders that may be considered in the future include, but are not limited to, Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD), spinal muscular atrophy (SMA), cytomegalovirus (CMV), guanidinoacetate N-methyltransferase (GAMT), and more. These conditions have differing ages of onset, treatments, or prevalence from previously approved newborn screening disorders. What does the changing landscape of newborn screening mean for providers? Visit the MDH Newborn Screening booth to learn more about these new conditions and how Newborn Screening can help you navigate positive/abnormal newborn screening results.
